Like all item-edit widgets, ttreeitemedit must be placed into a twidgetgrid — it does not work standalone; this is how MSEgui implements a tree view. itemlist maps the tree items (ttreelistedititem) to grid cells; its defaultnodestate initializes newly created root nodes (e.g. include ns_expanded to have them start expanded). Note that a grid cell's selected state is independent from a tree item's own selected state.
